Opening: New Jersey Youth Chorus, Coro Vivo Director

Reports to: Artistic Director

Status: Part-Time

Start Date: July 1, 2016 (If possible, the Director would hold auditions for potential choristers during one day in May, and one day in June.)


The New Jersey Youth Chorus, founded in 1992, is an auditioned choral program for choristers in grades 3 - 12.  The heart of its mission is to provide exceptional choral music education and performance experiences, fostering expression, artistry and growth. 

The Coro Vivo ensemble is for boys with unchanged voices, in grades 5 - 8. Rehearsals are held on Mondays from 4:15 - 6 PM in Chatham, NJ. 


Responsibilities and Duties:


In concert with the Artistic Director, develop an annual program for Coro Vivo in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision and approved operating budget.  This includes:

❖      Working on the curriculum goals

❖      Selecting appropriate, quality repertoire, representing various styles and genres

❖      Conducting all rehearsals and performances of Coro Vivo.  Performances include two annual concerts, and approximately 4 - 6 additional events

❖      Seeking performance opportunities

❖      Planning any workshops or in-house retreats, including recommendation of clinicians

❖      Leading the ensemble in a three half-day Summer Session (late August) OR in-house Retreat weekend (September)

❖      Conduct periodic events, such as ‘Bring a Friend Day,’ or “Kids for Kids” concerts


In addition, the Coro Vivo Director:

❖      Prepares weekly Memos for the choristers and parents (updates, practice-at-home, etc.)

❖      Auditions prospective choristers in May/June

❖      Provides input on marketing materials or press releases, as necessary

❖      Communicates in a timely manner with the Artistic Director and Choir Administrator, as appropriate, regarding needs and expectations of the choir

❖      Exhibits role model behavior commensurate with NJYC’s mission to inspire its members to achieve artistic excellence and develop their potential.  This includes:

●      Creating high standards

●      Inspiring and motivating choristers

●      Encouraging excellence in musicianship and vocal development.



❖      Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education

❖      Teaching experience preferred

❖      Knowledge of vocal technique and literature appropriate for young male singers

❖      Knowledge of Kodaly methodology and Takadimi rhythm syllables a plus

❖      Excellent classroom management

❖      Ability to communicate effectively with artistic staff, office staff and parents
