Audition Requirements

Audition requirements for each NJYC ensemble are below.  .

Primo Coro – Girls in grades 4 – 5

The following needs to be prepared AHEAD of the audition. Music can be found here.

  • Major scale sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do), ascending only
  • Are You Sleeping? (Frere Jacques).  Sung in unison and in a round.
  • My Country ‘Tis of Thee (America)

The following will be considered and tested in the audition (no preparation necessary):

  • Vocal Range
  • Vocal Quality
  • Intonation
  • Vocal Independence
  • Tonal memory (pitch matching, echo patterns)
  • Enthusiasm for singing!
     

Coro Vivo – Boys with unchanged voices in grades 4 – 8

The following needs to be prepared AHEAD of the audition. 

  • Major scale sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do)
  • Music Alone Shall Live (Music can be found here.)

The following will be considered and tested in the audition (no preparation necessary):

  • Vocal Range
  • Vocal Quality
  • Intonation
  • Vocal Independence
  • Tonal memory (pitch matching, echo patterns)
  • Enthusiasm for singing!
     

Solo Voce – Girls in grades 6 – 8

The following needs to be prepared AHEAD of the audition:

  • Major Scale sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do)
  • Jubilate Deo (This will be sung in unison and in canon during the audition. Music can be found here.)

Girls will learn new material, and the following will be considered and tested in the audition (no preparation necessary):

  • Vocal Range
  • Vocal Quality
  • Intonation
  • Vocal Independence (while singing in a round and parts)
  • Tonal and rhythmic memory (through echo patterns)
  • Enthusiasm for singing!
     

Camerata – Boys with changing and changed voices in grades 7-12

The following needs to be prepared AHEAD of the audition:

  • A song of your choice.  You only need to sing 16-measures.  This song should be memorized.  Please bring a copy of the music with you.

The following will be considered and tested in the audition (no preparation necessary):

  • Vocal Range
  • Vocal Quality
  • Intonation
  • Vocal Independence: a round will be learned and performed during the audition
  • Tonal memory (pitch matching, echo patterns)
  • Enthusiasm for singing!
     

Coriste – Girls in grades 9 – 12

The following needs to be prepared AHEAD of the audition. Music can be found here.

  • Major scale sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do), ascending and descending
  • Now I Walk in Beauty
  • Viva La Musica

In addition, girls may choose to sing 12 – 16 measures of one of the following, a cappella (you must have this memorized):

  • Ash Grove
  • Danny Boy
  • Greensleeves
  • Homeward Bound
  • How Can I Keep from Singing
  • Poor Wayfaring Stranger
  • Shenandoah
  • The Sally Gardens
  • A piece from Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias

The following will be considered and tested in the audition (no preparation necessary):

  • Vocal Range
  • Vocal Quality
  • Intonation
  • Vocal Independence
  • Tonal memory (pitch matching, echo patterns)
  • Enthusiasm for singing!
