 Young Men's Ensemble

 

The Young Men's Ensemble is under the direction of JD Burnett. 

 

The Ensemble is for boys in grades 7 – 12, with changing and changed voices.  Rehearsals are held at the Xavier Center, on the campus of the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, on Monday evenings from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.  The literature will include a wide variety of styles, including classical, folk, gospel and contemporary.

AUDITION PROCEDURES

 

Students will be auditioned in groups of 2 to 3. The Director will consider the quality of the voice and intonation (singing in tune) along with the quality of musicianship. If accepted, we use the musical information from the audition to determine placement within the choral program. You do not have to know everything to pass the audition!

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Advanced, Young Men’s Ensemble and Intermediate Choruses

  • Range
  • Vocal Quality
  • Singing in canon
  • Tonal and rhythmic memory testing
  • Students must sing a song of their choice: the piece must be memorized, at least 16 measures long, and may be sung a cappella or accompanied (bring a copy of your music)
  • Sight-reading: 8 measures
  • Identify written music symbols such as time signatures and key signatures

 

Musicianship Training Class                                                     

  • Range
  • Pitch-matching exercises
  • Rhythm exercises
  • Vocal quality
  • Students must sing a song of their choice (bring a copy of your music, if accompanied)
     

IMPORTANT: Please arrive 15 minutes before the audition to complete the paperwork. You are expected to be warmed up vocally ahead of time. At least one parent must accompany each child to the audition.

 

 

 

AUDITION INFORMATION

 

Please bring:

  • 1 small photo
  • $25.00 audition fee
  • Sheet music for audition piece, if necessary
  • Optional: A letter of recommendation from your music teacher
